Pharmacist provides life-saving guidance when woman mixes medications

A MedSavvy user is able to pivot her physician’s plans when worsening symptoms turn out to be a harmful interaction.

Medication savingsCarole’s new doctor put her on antibiotics for her recent bout with acute pneumonia. However, when she noticed worsening chest pains, Carole reached out to a pharmacist who was able to see all of her medications in her MedSavvy virtual medicine cabinet based on her insurance claims.

Luckily, the pharmacist pinpointed the culprit right away. Unbeknownst to her doctor, Carole was already taking ACE inhibitors for her blood pressure. The pharmacist identified that the aggravated symptoms were caused by the interaction between the two medications and could even lead to renal impairment and hyperkalemia (high potassium), which can cause long-term heart and kidney issues.

The pharmacist provided alternatives to the medication that would not adversely interact, which Carole and her doctor decided to try and monitor for any other side effects.

“I knew something wasn’t right when I started feeling worse. My doctor wasn’t easy to get ahold of but my MedSavvy pharmacist got right back to me about antibiotics interacting with my blood pressure pills and what other options would work instead.” - Carole
